About Cheema

Cheema is a small and beautiful town located in Sangrur district of Punjab. Situated at a distance of 20km southwest of the district headquarters, Sangrur this scenic location has a prominent religious significance attached to it. The famous religious soul, Sant Baba Attar Singh was born in this village and a Gurdwara in his memory is based here. It is one of the popular tourist and sightseeing destination in the entire district.

History of Cheema

Historical records of the city are not very prominent . It is believed to be under Nabha state and later was shifted to Jind state. After partition of India, the city came under the jurisdiction of PEPSU state which later on was shifted under Punjab state after the abolition of PEPSU.

Geography of Cheema

The main meridians of Cheema city is located at 30°5'50"North Latitude and 75°40'53"East Longitudes. The town is located at a height of 245metres above the sea level and remains bordered by Ahmedgarh Tehsil in the northern side Dhuri tehsil in the south, Dehlon covering the eastern side whereas Sherpur tehsil forming the boundary of the western part of the city. The topography of the city essentially makes it a part of Punjab plains where it is majorly coated with alluvial plains . There are no major water resources in the city except a few ponds which are majorly seasonal. River Gagghar, one of the prominent river of the state flows at a distance of 27km on the north eastern side of Cheema city.

Population of Cheema

Cheema town is known to have a total population of 11,615 individuals as per census 2011. Among this 6241 people are male and the rest 5374 individuals are females. Cheema city has seen a significant growth in population as of census 2001 when the total population of the city was 9347 individuals. Children population of this location as per the present census is 1227 within the age group of 0-6 years. This forms exactly a percentage of 10.56 of the total population of the town. The female sex ratio of Cheema is around 861 females against every 1000 male. This is quite low to the state average of 895 females. Also the child sex ratio stands at 848 girls for every 1000 boys which is again higher to the state average of 846 girls. Though the city is devoid of any schedule tribe population but it has a considerable number of schedule caste population which holds 26.05 % of the total population as per census 2011. The literacy level of the town is a concern for the administration here since it is extremely low in compared to the state average. The present literacy rate of Cheema city is 62.09% which is much less to the state average of 75.84%. The male literates of the city consist of 65.68% whereas the literate females are only 57. 93%. The native language of the city is Punjabi whereas the people can also speak, Hindi and English.

Climate of Cheema

Dry climate prevails over Cheema city. The summers are characterized with scorching heat and the winters with bracing cold. The summer season in Cheema stretches from March to June where June is the hottest month with temperature hovering around 27°C to 40°C. Dust winds make the climate more dry whereas occasional thunderstorms during these months only bring a temporary relief. July to Mid September is the monsoon season which is characterized by average rainfall and increased humidity to 75%. The days are relatively cooler but the nights remain equally warmer. The winter season stretches from the month of November to February where January is the coldest month. The average temperature during this time stays around 7°C to 20°C. The season is sometimes marked by cold waves of air which decreases the temperature well below freezing point and during that time frosts are common. This generally occurs during December end or in January. The best season to visit Cheema city and enjoy its scenic and pastoral beauty would be the months of October, November and February. During this time the weather remains moderate and makes it ideal to move around.

Cheema city is categorized as a Nagar Panchyat city and it falls under Sangrur tehsil for administration purpose. The whole area of the city is divided into 11 wards and elections happen in this area after every 5 years. The Nagar Panchyat Office remains in charge of the supply of basic requisites of the natives that includes drinking water, electric supply, cleanliness and hygienic environment, public health and others.

Culture of Cheema

The culture of Cheema is predominantly a mixed culture with population from all major religions and clans like Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian etc. However the Muslim population in this city is much higher in compared to the others. Women still maintains their pardah system in some families while others are slowly opening up to modern values of the society. Education and the importance of the same are slowly getting popularity among the natives. Economy of Cheema

The economy of Cheema is largely depended on agricultural income as the majority of the population is agriculturists for generations. According to census 2011, 3885 people are engaged in work in the town of which 94.26% are involved in Main line work like agriculture. Traditional method of cultivation is followed in this region which often results into less amount of produce which is sufficient for consumption for not enough for sale. However the agricultural department of Sangrur has notified the situation and working towards educating the farmers with modern techniques of cropping The major crops cultivated here include Paddy, wheat, barley, gram, Mustard, Moong, Groundnut and cotton. The natives are also involved in producing horticulture crops which includes Guava , ber, Mango, Grapes, Kinnow, Orange, Pear etc. Livestock business is another mode of earning, for the natives of Cheema town.Cattle, Crossbred cattle, sheep, goat and poultry business are done by many people here.

Tourism in Cheema

Cheema is a city with huge religious significance. It is believed that Sant Baba Attar Singh was born in this location. In the memory of this pious soul, a Gurudwara has been built by its devotees on this land to remember the charisma of the saint. The Gurudwara is named as Gurudwara Janam Asthan where devotees come to offer prayers even from far away places. The Gurudwara was created by Baba Teja Singh who was a follower of Sant Baba Attar Singh. The structure of the Gurudwara here is extremely interesting and it has huge resemblance with Gurudwara Attal of Amritsar. The structure is essentially a nine storied building based on the same land where the ancestral house of Sant Baba Attar Singh was located. The present construction was done abolishing the old house. The town also has a Sheetla Mandir in the heart of city, A water tank is based close by to the temple which is usually used for taking a holy bath. It is believed by the natives here that Sita, wife of Lord Rama used to visit this place while they lived away from their kingdom. Gurudwara Nanaksar is another prominent religious place in the city which is believed to be constructed by Baba Attar Singh. For visitors it is advisable to stay either in Sangrur or find a hotel in Sunam.

Transport in Cheema

Cheema city can be well communicated by various modes of transport like airways, railways and roadways. The nearest airport to Cheema city is Ludhiana Airport which is based at a distance of 74 kms from Sangrur city. But the same is not operational at the moment. However Chandigarh airport also lies close at a distance of 116 km from Sangrur city center and can be traveled in 2hrs 30 mins. Sangrur to Cheema is only 20 kms. The distance from Sangrur can be traveled by regular buses to Chandigarh from Sangrur Bus Stand. There are two major railway stations that are based close to Cheema city and they are Sunam Railway station at a distance of 7 km and Sangrur Railway distance based in Sangrur. There are multiple number of trains travelling through these stations connecting popular locations like Ludhiana, Amritsar, Hisar, Dhuri, Shri Ganganagar, Nanded, Mangalore, Jammu Tawi, Kanyakumari and many others. Cheema city is facilitated with well connected roadways that connects all the nearby places which includes Sunam, Dhri, Langowal etc. There are regular buses travelling between Cheema and Sangrur from where one can fetch buses to all popular and major cities like Amritsar, Chandigarh, Hisar etc. The local transport of the people based here are limited to bicycles or motorbikes. Auto rickshaws are rare in this city.
